KBI’s Cell Therapy team, located in The Woodlands, TX, has been managing a fully functional manufacturing facility supporting cell therapies and have been developing therapies since 2001.

As an award-winning global biopharmaceutical contract services organization, their main focus is accelerated drug development and bio-manufacturing services for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

With an expanded market base and growing need for efficient clinical trials, as well as commercial manufacturing services for mammalian, microbial, and cell therapy programs, it was time to renovate the existing facility to increase workflow capacity.

The project team worked through a multi-phase design to increase the size of their Quality Control lab and expanding the number of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing suites that met FDA, GMP, and other codes and regulations. In an effort to provide an uninterrupted manufacturing process during hurricane and flood events, extensive design was put into UPS and generator design. As a result, the facility received updates to the existing generator and building support systems (electrical, plumbing, gases and clean air).

In addition to the renovated areas, new interior areas included open office space, administration conference room and modernized break room.

Exterior additions included a masterfully designed Tank Yard for new bulk capacity liquid nitrogen system with vacuum jacketed piping and carbon dioxide system, special electrical panel access mezzanine, UPS system and concrete masonry Chiller Yard for equipment for the new HVAC system.

The design team successfully worked with one of the most stringent city planning codes to make sure the Tank Yard noise was minimized. Even though the new design added several large pieces of exterior equipment, the noise level was reduced below the original sound level. Neighbors and city planners alike were pleased with the outcome of the exterior design.

Within the space, the new open office area allows researchers to collaborate together to solve problems, foster teamwork and encourage information sharing.

The large viewing windows located in the Quality Control lab and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing suites provide a welcoming view of KBI’s unique processes for clients, employees and visitors to see while touring the space.

Custom designed ceiling hung utility umbilical systems in the Quality Control lab and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing suites were designed to act as pathways to carry power, data and gases to service the required lab-specific equipment.
